Accounts & debt types

The Accounts tab shows everything in two halves — what you have and what you owe — with each kind of account in its own group. Tap a group to open it, tap an account to see its details.

The groups

Only the groups you actually have are shown. Each one shows its total on the right.

How Sumwright works out the type

Sumwright uses the best information it has, in this order:

  1. Your choice — if you set a type, it always wins.
  2. Your bank — when the bank says what the account is.
  3. The payments — the lender’s name and the pattern, e.g. the same amount every month to a known mortgage servicer.
  4. AI help — when the rules aren’t sure, an AI model looks at the lender’s name and payment amount only (never your name or account numbers). The account says “Sumwright’s best guess — tap to change”.

Lender names are tidied up too: a bank line like “To Msu Federal Cu-achorig” shows as MSU Federal Credit Union.

Change a debt’s type

1

Open the account

iPhone & Android
On the Accounts tab, open the group and tap the account.
Mac & Windows
Open Accounts in the sidebar and select the account.
2

Pick a type

Tap Type (on desktop, use the Type menu) and choose the right one — say, Mortgage. To undo, choose Let Sumwright decide.

3

Decide whether it’s in the Debt Plan

Use Include in Debt Plan. Mortgages and loans start outside the plan; cards and pay-later plans start inside it. The debt stays in your total either way.

Example

Jordan pays two mortgages from checking: $1,009 a month to a community bank and $1,450 a month to a national mortgage servicer. Both appear under Mortgages on the Accounts tab, not under Credit cards, and neither is in the Debt Plan — so Jordan’s card payoff plan isn’t thrown off by two large home-loan payments.

Jordan also has a 401(k) linked with the Investment & retirement accounts add-on. It shows under Investments and counts toward net worth, but the Debt Plan never uses it.

Balances for payment-only debts. When Sumwright only sees the payments (not the account itself), it may ask for the balance left. Add it once and the plan uses it from then on.
